How to use free protovpn VPN on ubuntu 20.04 using linux CLI?

Please note this is going to lock you out from your server and you will need to reboot to connect again. You should know what are you doing. While I am writing this, I am connected to my server using LAN using local IP address 10.0.0.X or 192.168.X.X.
For VPS like DigitalOcean or Vultr use another server to connect this VPN server locally.

So, how to use free protovpn VPN on ubuntu 20.04 using linux CLI?

  • Create a free account at ProtonVPN website.
  • Follow the instructions and install latest protonvpn CLI from here: https://github.com/Rafficer/linux-cli-community?tab=readme-ov-file#manual-installation-from-source
    NOTE (17 March 2024): It is not going to work if you are going to use the official CLI. Also, it is not going to work if you are going to use pre-built CLI. The trick is to rebuild to make it work with latest version.

Login
protonvpn init
Do not enter your account username and password. Instead go to your account settings and use OpenVPN username and password.
protonvpn connect
and choose server.
